I am so glad to have you here, again, to look at what I have to write. Many times, parents come to me and ask me to speak to their children and tell them what it takes to become a doctor. Other times they ask me to inspire their children into the career, and I always wonder how much I can do in a 3-minute conversation.

I studied for my medical degree in Kenya, ie Bachelor’s of Medicine and Bachelor’s of Surgery (MBChB). I have already done my United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 exam as I am thinking of practicing medicine in the United States after graduating from my Global Health master’s program at Duke University in North Carolina. However, not every doctor spends their lives in the wards and consultation rooms, others are made for the boardrooms to make decisions and policies for the betterment of the medical field. So far, I have yet to decide if I will be going back to the wards, or I will be taking flights internationally to ensure that the world runs the hospitals the right way and make decisions in board rooms. If you stick here longer, in a year or so, we might have the decision in place already!

Every parent dreams of seeing their child grow into a well-rounded, successful adult. For some, that vision includes a career in medicine, an industry that is both demanding and rewarding. If your child shows early signs of interest in healthcare—whether it’s through a fascination with science or an eagerness to help others—you can play an essential role in nurturing this interest. Here’s how you can prepare your child for a fulfilling journey toward a medical career.

1. Foster a Love for Learning Early

Medicine is a field driven by continuous learning. Encourage curiosity in your child by answering their questions with enthusiasm and encouraging them to explore new topics. Provide books, documentaries, and science kits that challenge them to think critically. For example, if your child is curious about how the body works, take the opportunity to learn together—whether through simple anatomy books or educational programs.

2. Support Their Science and Math Education

A solid foundation in science and math is crucial for future medical professionals. Engage your child in activities that build these skills in fun, practical ways. Science experiments, puzzles, and games can help make subjects like biology and chemistry more exciting. If they show a deeper interest, consider enrolling them in science clubs or extracurricular activities at school, which can expand their understanding beyond the classroom.

3. Teach Compassion and Empathy

Being a doctor or healthcare professional isn’t just about diagnosing illnesses; it’s also about connecting with people. Teach your child empathy by encouraging them to help others and understand different perspectives. Volunteering together at community events or visiting elderly family members can help instill a sense of compassion that is essential in healthcare.

4. Highlight the Importance of Discipline

The journey to becoming a medical professional requires focus and dedication. Early on, teach your child the value of discipline by setting routines, encouraging good study habits, and helping them manage their time effectively. Whether it’s homework or after-school activities, learning how to balance responsibilities will be a critical skill they carry forward.

5. Provide Real-Life Exposure

Take advantage of opportunities to expose your child to the healthcare field in real life. Visit hospitals, talk to doctors, and introduce them to medical professionals who can share their experiences. Encourage participation in health-focused events, whether it’s a community health fair or a first-aid class. Real-life experiences can provide invaluable insight into what it means to work in healthcare.

6. Encourage Long-Term Goal Setting

Becoming a doctor is a long-term commitment, and your child will need to understand the road ahead. Help them set achievable short-term goals that build toward their future, whether it’s excelling in biology class or completing a volunteer project. Celebrate their progress, no matter how small, to keep them motivated and excited about the journey.

7. Keep the Conversation Open

Finally, remember that your child’s interests may change as they grow. Keep the conversation open, and be ready to support their choices, even if they ultimately decide on a different path. Encourage exploration while reminding them that your love and support are unconditional, no matter which career they choose.

Conclusion

A career in medicine is an ambitious goal, but with the right guidance and support, your child can grow into a compassionate, knowledgeable healthcare professional. By fostering curiosity, encouraging empathy, and nurturing their passion, you’re not just preparing them for medical school—you’re helping them build a future where they can make a meaningful impact on the world.

For the parents here, why would you like your children to pursue a career in medicine? For the doctors here, what other tips have I left behind?

Lots of Love,

Dr. Ruguru Kimani.
